What to Expect at Your Child's First Class

4 min read · UNDRGRND Movement

A little nervousness before a first class is normal — for children and parents alike. Here's what to expect so you both feel ready.

The unknown is the hardest part. Once you know what a first class actually looks like, most of the nerves disappear. Here's a clear picture.

Before the class

When you get in touch, we'll confirm the day, time and location that suits your family and let you know which program fits your child's age. There's no need to prepare anything special — just arrive a few minutes early so your child can settle in.

What to wear and bring

  • Comfortable, fitted activewear they can move freely in (avoid anything too loose for aerial and floor work).
  • Bare feet or grip socks — we'll advise based on the session.
  • A water bottle and hair tied back.
  • That's it. No equipment to buy to get started.

How a class runs

Classes are small and fully supervised. A typical session moves through a warm-up and movement games, some skill-building across dance, conditioning and beginner aerial or balance, and a calm cool-down. Instructors keep the tone playful and encouraging — the aim of a first class is for your child to feel welcome and want to come back, not to master anything.

If your child is shy

Completely normal. Our instructors are experienced at gently bringing in quieter children, and there's never pressure to perform. Many children who cling to the wall in week one are leading the warm-up by week four. You're welcome to stay nearby for reassurance early on.

How parents can help

Keep it low-key and positive. Avoid loading the moment with expectations — "go and have fun and see what you think" works far better than "this is going to be amazing." After class, ask what they enjoyed rather than how they did.
